Have you ever wondered why it was more difficult to keep your hair moisturized during the summer months? The dry air of summer can reek havoc on your hair. Combining that with the typical activities of summer which include swimming and enjoying long hot summer days outdoors makes it more important than ever to ensure that your hair is protected. Below are 5 easy tips to keep your hair shiny and healthy during this season.

Tip #1-Pre-poo – Pre-poo-ing is the process of applying moisture to the hair prior to shampooing. It can be done with oils or conditioners with the goal of minimizing the dryness to the hair that can be associated with shampooing.  In addition, make sure that you are using a shampoo that is sulfate free to minimize dryness. Adding this to your summer hair care routine can help you retain moisture.

Tip #2 – Deep conditioning –Deep conditioning is the process of applying conditioner to your hair and using a heat source to help the conditioner penetrate the hair shaft. This process helps retain moisture and maximizes the health of your hair strands.

Tip#3 –Rinse with Cold Water – When rinsing out your conditioner, using cold water helps close the cuticle and prevents all of the moisture you’ve added from seeping out of the hair strand.

Tip #4-Use Oils and Butters – You have to find a product that works for you to achieve optimal moisture. Many products contain substances called humectants which attract moisture to your hair. Sounds great right?! Well, be careful because too much humidity in the air can cause too much moisture to enter the hair shaft which can lead to frizziness and can damage the hair by suffocating or choking the cuticles. This is why many naturals use a different product in the more humid months vs the winter months.

Tip #5 – Wear Protective Styles-Protective styles (styles that require little to no manipulation of the hair) are an easy way to keep your hair free from the elements of summer. Be sure to deep condition prior to any protective style and keep hair clean and moisturized.

If you keep these tips in mind, you will be well on your way to bouncy, strandtastic hair.
